  • Tajikistan Hosts Central Asia Regional Meeting of the Heads of Emergency Services on Disaster Risk Reduction Mar 31, 2017

    Dushanbe, Tajikistan, 31 March, 2017. A regional ministerial meeting of the Heads of Emergency Services of the Central Asian countries was held today in Dushanbe hosted by the Government of Tajikistan to discuss and agree on the Regional statement of the countries of Central Asia at upcoming Fifth Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), which will be held in May 2017 in Cancun, Mexico. The disaster risk reduction partners from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, and Tajikistan along with the in country represented CA diplomatic missions, UN agencies and other international development organizations have discussed an effective implementation of the national strategies under the Sendai DRR Framework and the progress achieved in the region up to date. The regional meeting contributed towards the regional dialogue and strategic planning on.

  • Body Language Reading and Profiling Training for Afghan and Turkmen Border Officers Mar 17, 2017

    17 March 2017 - In partnership with OSCE Centre in Asghabat, UNDP’s EU-BOMNAF project conducted a week-long training course for ten Afghan Border Police (ABP) ten Turkmen State Border Service Officers (SBS), about Body Language Reading and Profiling. Training for these beneficiary participants, who serve on the Afghan-Turkmen border, was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan during the second week of March.

    The abnormality with weather conditions back in 2015 triggered several mudflows and floods throughout Tajikistan highlighting the threat posed by climate-related disasters. Recognizing this threat, the United Nations Development Programme within the framework of “Livelihood Improvement in Tajik-Afghan Cross-border Areas (LITACA)” project conducted a feasibility study in eastern Khatlon to identify locations for implementation of disaster risk reduction initiatives.

The 6th Steering Committee (SC) meeting of “Livelihoods Improvement in Tajik-Afghan Cross-border Areas (LITACA)” project brought together representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan, Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Embassy of Japan in Tajikistan, JICA Tajikistan and Afghanistan, as well as UNDP representatives of both countries. Progress of project implementation, challenges faced, ways forward and work plan for 2017 were presented to the SC members.
