Dushanbe, June 13, 2016 The first UN Information and Resource Center (UN IRC) in Tajikistan was officially inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Sirodjiddin Aslov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Assistant Secretary General, Assistant Administrator, Regional Director of the United Nations Development Programme for Eastern Europe and CIS countries, Regional UN Development Group Chair. The opening ceremony was moderated by Mr. Alexander Zuev, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan. The ceremony was attended by the heads of UN Agencies in Tajikistan, representatives of diplomatic corps, civil society, young people and the media.
Tackling the structural causes of extremism requires development solutions, says Head of UNDP in Europe and CIS

Dushanbe – Combatting the rise of violent extremism in Central Asia and beyond will require long-term measures that include creating life opportunities for young people and a chance to serve and shape the future of their communities, said experts at a conference on the phenomenon that opened here today. “Comprehensive approaches are needed and there is a growing understanding that top-down, security-based approaches to countering violent extremism are not sufficient to deal with this complex phenomenon,” said Cihan Sultanoğlu, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS. Opening the event with Sirodjidin Aslov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Republic of Tajikistan, Ms. Sultanoğlu said the focus should be on addressing “the structural causes and drivers of violent extremism – problems like economic and social exclusion, inequality and injustice, the rejection of cultural and religious diversity, shrinking civic space and restrictions on basic democratic freedoms.”

IMPROVED LIVELIHOOD OF POPULATION IN RASHT VALLEY

Dushanbe, 25 May 2015. Five UN agencies have joined their efforts in improving livelihoods and social protection in Rasht Valley. The second Steering Committee meeting on Project “Empowering Rural Communities with Better Livelihood and Social Protection”, jointly implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, UN Women and UN WFP, has been conducted today. The three-year Project is financed by the UN Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and five UN Agencies involved in project implementation.

Eighteen women from the Afghan Border Police joined two female officers from the Tajikistan Border Force and three from Tajikistan’s Drug Control Agency. Together they received instruction in a range of subjects including Anti-corruption, First Aid, Gender Equality, Human Rights, Trafficking in Humans & Drugs, and Leadership & Management. The experts who delivered this instruction were also women, which encouraged the free exchange of opinions and experiences between students and experts.

Meeting of entrepreneurs of the Republic of Tajikistan and Islamic Republic of Afghanistan took place in Kurgan-Tube city, Khatlon region under the small grants initiatives of UNDP Tajikistan project on "Livelihood Improvement in Tajik-Afghan Cross-border Areas (LITACA)", financed by the Government of Japan through JICA Tajikistan.
JOINT ADVOCACY PROJECT ON HIV/AIDS

On April 15, 2016, UN Joint Advocacy Project on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS, UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF) in Tajikistan, in cooperation with national and international partners organized the Project Board Meeting to approve the Annual Work Plan of the UN Joint Advocacy Project on HIV/AIDS (UNJAP).The event has brought together around 20 representatives from Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population of Tajikistan (MHSP), Tajik National University (TNU), National Coordination Committee on fighting against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (NCC), UN Agencies, Networks of people living with HIV and Civil Society Organizations.
UN Peacebuilding Support Office Advisory Group visited Sogd Province

UN Peace Building Support Office (PBSO’s) Advisory Group and staff, led by Director and Deputy Head of PBSO Ms. Mari Yamashita, and a UN Tajikistan team led by UNDP Country Director Jan Harfst, met with the Head of B.Gafurov district Mr. Naziri Zarif Valizoda and other district representatives. The meeting was devoted to issues of cooperation in order to prevent tensions in the border area as well as to strengthen good neighborly relations between communities living along the Tajik-Kyrgyz border. The Chairmen of Khistevarz and Ovchikalacha municipalities of B.Gafurov district, heads of the district departments on youth and women and family affairs as well as several community activists took part in the meeting.
Tajikistan National Mine Action Center Celebrates

On April 4, 2016 Tajikistan National Mine Action Center (TNMAC) with UNDP Support to Tajikistan Mine Action Programme and participation of the UN agencies and Government of Tajikistan representatives, international organization such as OSCE, EU, NPA, FSD, ICRC and representatives of donor countries such as the US, France, UK, Iran, Afghanistan, Japan embassies as well as other national NGOs will commemorated the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. This day was officially announced as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action by resolution of UN General Assembly dated December 8, 2005, and it is annually celebrated at the international level. Tajikistan has been celebrating this event since 2006.
Navruz brings joy and health to population of Dusti district of Khatlon

Residents of Dusti district, Khatlon region continue celebrating Navruz holiday. The opening ceremony of the rural health center took place on March 23, 2016. Deputy Chairman of the district, local authorities and representatives of UNDP in Tajikistan were welcomed by people living in Panjrud village with music and songs. Rural health center of Panjrud village was built in the framework of UNDP Tajikistan project "Livelihood Improvement in Tajik-Afghan Cross-border Areas (LITACA)", financed by the Government of Japan through JICA Tajikistan.
