Meeting of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in TajikistanJul 24, 2014
Dushanbe, 24 July 2014: the National Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) meeting chaired by Mr. Murodali Alimardon, Deputy Prime Minister and the Chairman of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction was held.
Members of the National Platform on DRR, representing 17 Ministries and State Agencies, as well as REACT partners (Rapid Emergency Assessment and Coordination Team) representing donor agencies including Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan, UN agencies, including UNDP, UNOCHA, UNICEF, UNWFP and UNFAO as well as international organizations including International Federation of Red Crescent Society, German Red Cross, ACTED, HELVETAS, GIZ, OXFAM, FOCUS, German Agro-Action, Save the Children, and Mercy Corps have actively participated at the meeting.
The meeting included discussions and presentations covering (1) major achievements of the National Platform in 2013; (2) establishment of Unified Emergency Management System in Tajikistan; (3) progress towards Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) and (4) updates by the development partners on implementation of DRR interventions in Tajikistan.
During the meeting the disaster risk management efforts in Tajikistan, challenges, gaps and recommendations on improvement of disaster risk reduction and management in Tajikistan were substantively discussed.
In the course of discussion, the chairman of NP highlighted the issues of monitoring of uranium tailings, chemical waste sites, landslides and also monitoring of HPP dams. He called the development community to provide technical support in managing the risks of landslides and tailings in Tajikistan and also in strengthening the monitoring efforts in this regard. Moreover, in conclusion it was recommended to improve the current level of coordination between the Government and development partners in more close communication on the identified DRR specific problems in Tajikistan and also potential funding opportunities in addressing these problems.
