Establishment of Regional Monitoring and Early Warning System in Khatlon Oblast
Kurgan – Tyube, 1 August 2014: Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on establishment of Regional Monitoring and Early Warning System (RMEWS) in Khatlon Oblast was signed between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade RT (MEDT) and the Government of Khatlon Oblast.
The main objective of the RMEWS is to conduct regular monitoring and provide early warning information to all interested parties both within and outside the Oblast. The RMEWS will also include a data base covering 5 indicators, namely weather, energy, health, food security and economy to guide planning and decision making by the concerned stakeholders.
For the efficient functioning of RMEWS, UNDP has provided a comprehensive capacity building package, including both soft (training) and hard (equipment and furniture) interventions. For the same purpose, the Regional MEWS will be working closely with the National MEWS, based in MEDT.
The parties agreed to continue the fruitful cooperation for more effective disaster risk reduction in Khatlon Oblast.
