The first UN Information and Resource Center (UN IRC) in Tajikistan was officially inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Sirodjiddin Aslov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Assistant Secretary General, Assistant Administrator, Regional Director of the United Nations Development Programme for Eastern Europe and CIS countries, Regional UN Development Group Chair.
The opening ceremony was moderated by Mr. Alexander Zuev, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan. The ceremony was attended by the heads of UN Agencies in Tajikistan, representatives of diplomatic corps, civil society, young people and the media.
UN IRC is one of the few established in the CIS space, is established under the Russian - Tajik Slavonic University in Dushanbe and is well equipped to provide the access to the information about the UN in general, its activities in Tajikistan and other relevant topics. The library of the UN IRC contains more than 6000 copies of the literature on the main UN languages and also provides access to all digital resources of major UN entities.
The UN IRC will seek to increase the awareness about the United Nations, its agencies, funds and programmes presented in Tajikistan and the global agenda of the UN, including the SDGs. The UN IRC will provide timely, accurate, impartial, comprehensive, relevant and coherent information on UN objectives and activities to the widest global public. It is envisaged that the center will host events, open lectures, thematic meetings and relevant events with heads of UN agencies in Tajikistan, visiting UN and national experts on a regular basis.
The Centre will provide an opportunity for students to become better acquainted with the activities of UN agencies, the approaches in resolving global issues of human development, population issues, eradication of poverty, hunger, inequality between countries, provision of health care, employment, climate change and environmental protection, and more.
As noted by Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu "This unique center will be a useful platform for all residents, especially school children, students, journalists, experts and scientists who are interested in the UN. Hopefully, UN IRC will gradually become one of most useful and comfortable places for all interested and play a crucial role in the informational sphere of Tajikistan."
Tajikistan as a full member of the UN creates all the necessary conditions for the activities of UN agencies, which in turn will support the country in improving the welfare of the population, ensuring the social and economic development and further integration of the country into the world community.
