On April 11, 2017, President of Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Emomali Rahmon met with United Nations Resident Coordinator Dr. Pratibha Mehta. The current state and prospects of cooperation between Tajikistan and UN have been discussed.
The President of Tajikistan Mr. Emomali Rahmon, recalling the 25th anniversary of the country's membership in the UN, noted with satisfaction that UN institutions have played a historic role in the process of establishing peace, stability and national unity in Tajikistan.
Dr. Mehta thanked the Government of Tajikistan for 25 years of strong cooperation with the UN and reaffirmed UN agencies’ readiness and commitment to deliver a coordinated response to the remaining challenges and to support progress on the sustainable development goals through the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for 2016-2020. She highlighted that during 5 years UN agencies will contribute over 363 mln. USD for the for development of the country.
Dr. Mehta thanked President Mr. Emomali Rahmon for his personal commitment in implementing the new Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 noting that United Nations in Tajikistan appreciates the President’s leading role in ensuring the alignment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with national priorities as reflected in the National Development Strategy 2016-2030 and Mid-term Development Strategy 2016-2020. The implementation of these programs includes improving the welfare of the population, social development, environmental protection, ensuring broad universal access to electricity, preventing water-related natural disasters and many other priorities of Tajikistan where UN is contributing through UNDAF.
Dr. Mehta congratulated the President and the Government of Tajikistan for adopting UNGA Resolution and declaration of the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028" addressing water issues at the global arena and ensured UN support in its implementation.
