Statement by Dr. Pratibha Mehta,

UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan

at the Opening Ceremony of the International Youth Day 2017

Honorable Chairman of the Committee of Youth and Sport,

Dustoni aziz, salom aleykum,

I am very happy to be here today with all of you to celebrate the International Youth Day, focusing on Youth and Peace.  Nationally, the President of Tajikistan, His Excellency Mr. Emomoli Rahmon has also declared 2017 as the National Youth Year in Tajikistan.

Today’s generation of young people is the largest the world has ever known. One in every three person alive today is under 30 years of age, here in Tajikistan 70% population is under 30yrs. No country in the world can carve out a bright present and future without empowering and involving this huge population.

The UN Member States while adopting the SDGs Agenda 2030 in September 2015, recognized the importance of working with all stakeholder, but most importantly the young people, in ensuring sustainable development and without development there can be no peace.  Today, the world is facing many complex challenges of vast inequality, unemployment, intolerance, violent conflicts and war. We know that there can be no sustained peace without development of all people: all men, women, people living in rural, urban and mountainous areas, people living with disabilities, etc.  Everyone has to get involved in finding solutions, but most of its  young people like you have to get involved to shape your  present and your future. We need your ideas, energy, creativity and enthusiasm. Around the world and in Tajikistan, young men and women are showing great interest in social issues and doing social good. They are volunteering their time, they are using social media and other means to promote public awareness on health, environment, promoting dialogue for peace; they are innovating new approaches to reach population living in remote areas, using technology and inventing new mobile Apps.

I’m so pleased to see so many of you are so proactively contributing with your  entrepreneurial spirit.  We see it from your active engagement in such initiatives as Start-Up Choihona, Y-PEERs, Tajik Youth Climate Coalition, New Century Youth, Tajikistan Youth Generation and many others.

For United Nations, youth empowerment and participation in all aspects of sustainable development  is an important objective of our five years development cooperation in Tajikistan. Today’s event is your event and I hope you will take advantage of all the various activities and will participate in various discussion on role of youth in peace, innovative start- ups for social good, and will network to generate more ideas.

Tashakkuri zied.
