Joint Project Steering Committee meeting for strengthening Disaster Risk Management and Response Capacities

Chairman of CoES, Mr. Rustam Nazarzoda is delivering his opening speech

On 19 December, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tajikistan held the Joint Project Steering Committee meeting of the Disaster Risk Management Programme at UNDP Country Office, with participation of UNDP Country Director, Chairman of the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government (CoES) of the Republic of Tajikistan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Tajikistan, Third Secretary Embassy of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Tajikistan, and the Director of Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan, as well as representatives of relevant ministries from the Government of Tajikistan.

The main objective of this meeting was to present the achievements in 2017. For example, the capacity building of national Search-and-Rescue teams through the provision of 26 machinery and vehicles, and strengthening regional ties through the regional conference was held in Dushanbe March 2017 were mainly addressed. Furthermore, this meeting was also focused on the strategic plans for 2018 including challenges and opportunities envisaged within the project’s framework in order to intensify the further capacity on Disaster Risk Management spectrum.

During his speech Mr. Rustam Nazarzoda, Chairman of CoES, stated: “It is only through joint cooperation that we shall be able to carry out the implementation of the project activities.”

Mr. Jan Harfst. UNDP Country Director, highlighted the importance of strengthening Disaster Risk Management in Tajikistan, and he said that: “Disaster Risk Management is one of the cross-cutting issues in the Global Agenda 2030. it is also a key outcome area of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework for Tajikistan.”

Also, Ambassador of the Government of Japan to the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Hajime Kitaoka said: “Disaster Risk Management is very special for me, because I still so vividly remember the signing ceremony of on 7th September last year with Mr. Jan with the attendance of Mr. Nazarzoda.”


In 2016, UNDP signed three new project documents with CoES and corresponding funding schemes agreed with the Government of Japan, the Russian Federation-UNDP Trust Fund for Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation for the implementation of projects to strengthen disaster risk reduction, preparedness and response capacities, as well as disaster risk governance in Tajikistan.
