Dushanbe, July 15, 2014. From 14 to 19 July in Dushanbe in the framework of the UNDP / GEF project "Transfer technology and market development of SHP in Tajikistan" launched a series of training "on the development of small hydropower plants." During the training, along with representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Tajik Technical University, OSHC "Barki Tojik" Association of Power Engineers Tajikistan SUE "TAJIKTEXTILMASH" and other interested local parties also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Industry of Kyrgyzstan.

Dushanbe, 4 July 2014. Five different UN agencies have joined their efforts in improving livelihoods and social protection in Rasht Valley. Steering Committee Meeting on Project “Empowering Rural Communities with Better Livelihood and Social Protection”, jointly implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, UN Women and UN WFP, has been conducted today. The three-year Project with the total amount of 3.5 million US dollars is financed by the UN Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and five UN Agencies involved in project implementation.

Tajik entrepreneurs explore the opportunities for regional trade and investment cooperation between the entrepreneurs from Central Asian countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan at the Economic Business forum which was held in “Business to Business” format and organized by UNDP Aid for Trade project (AFT) jointly with USAID Afghanistan trade and revenue Project (ATAR), with close cooperation with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Tajikistan.

19 June 2014 – National Partner Forum was held under chairmanship of National Coordination Committee to fight with HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to discuss three National Strategic Plans on HIV, TB, and Malaria Control developed for the period 2015-2020. High-level governmental officials, representatives of oblast khukumats; three directors of Republican AIDS Control Center, Republican TB Control Center, Republican Tropical Diseases Centre; heads of international donor agencies as well as representatives of civil society have actively participated in the forum to deliberate the goals and objectives of these strategic documents, to refine inconsistencies, and conclude the final statements in line with National Development Strategies.

Dushanbe, Tajikistan (18 June 2014) – Twenty-six officers from Tajik law enforcement agencies completed Training on Chemical substances and precursors. The training was organized jointly within EU-UNDP Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA) and Border Management Program of OSCE Office in Tajikistan. The event is part of a series of training courses aimed at capacity development of Tajik border security agencies to better cope modern treats and challenges, especially in the area of identification of narcotics and precursors.

UNDP Partnership with EU Improves Lives, Secures Border, Promotes Trade Dushanbe, 22/May/2014 – As part of the Border Management for North Afghanistan project (BOMNAF) financed by the European Union (EU) at the amount of €8,000,000, ($10,710,000) and implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tajikistan, UNDP handed over a newly constructed Border Crossing Point to the Afghan Border Police. The event took place near the town of Djomarji Bolo, in Afghanistan's Badakhshan Province, on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border and is the culmination of one phase in UNDP’s Border Management Badakhshan Afghanistan (EU-BOMNAF) project.

On 15th of May in Dushanbe city the wide civic awareness campaign under the slogan "I'm for safety on the roads, and what about you?" will be conducted by the initiative of the UNDP/GEF project "Support to the Sustainable Transport Management in Dushanbe city" and in close collaboration with the Mayor office of Dushanbe, the State Automobile Inspectorate of Dushanbe, the Public Organization "The 21st Century Youth" and the UN Volunteers. The campaign is targeted to behavioral change of drivers of public transports, pedestrians and public involvement to addressing problems of roads safety and public transport management of Dushanbe city. The purpose of this event is prevention of road traffic accidents, promotion to the efficient operation of the public transport, improving of drivers’ and pedestrians’ traffic literacy and behavioral change.

UNDP HELP TO SME'S OF TAJIKISTAN IN DEVELOPMENT OF TRADE AND BUSINESS RELATIONS WITH THE ENTREPRENEURS OF AFGHANISTAN
On May 7, 2014 UNDP Aid for Trade Project jointly with USAID Afghanistan Trade and Revenue (ATAR) project have conducted the meeting with the entrepreneurs – potential exporters of Sughd Oblast. The topic of the meeting was aimed at the development of trade in frontier zone with Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and creation of favorable conditions for the business partnership enhancement in the neighboring countries. It should be noted that United Nations Development Programme in Tajikistan started active implementation of the III phase of Aid for Trade project aimed at improving SMEs’ trade and export capacity and increasing trade and export volumes, creation of trade promotion centers both at the national and local levels, as well as improving trade policy regime and other, that will be implemented on the national level.

22 April 2014 Presentation and discussion of the Report“Unemployment, Employment and Access to Jobs”, prepared with the support of International Labour Organization (ILO) for the National Human Development Report (NHDR) “Tajikistan: Access to Resources for Human Development”, was conducted in Dushanbe. UNDP Mainstreaming Human Development t in Tajikistan (MHDT) project is supporting the development of National Human Development Report (NHDR) “Tajikistan: Access to Resources for Human Development”. The report is being developed in cooperation with other UN Agencies. ILO, through engagement of Youth Employment Officer, has provided technical support in development of “Unemployment, Employment and Access to Jobs” Report.

On 12-13 April 2014, due to heavy rains and hailstorm, flash floods and mudslides hit six districts of south east Khatlon Province of Tajikistan. According to the Situation Assessment reports, fifteen people were killed due to being trapped under their houses, while one more person died in the hospital as a result of injury during the disaster. Additionally 37 people have been injured during the two days after the event. The heavy rains have also caused significant damage to households and local infrastructure. More than 487 households were affected; including 16 had their houses completely destroyed. The livelihoods of the affected population were also significantly damaged. The mudslide killed more than 1,000 heads of cattle on its way. For more details, please follow the below link:

Dushanbe, 19 March 2014 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tajikistan signed today an Exchange of Note with the Government of Japan and Grant Agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to support the “ Project for Livelihood Improvement in Tajik-Afghan Cross-border Areas (LITACA)”. The new three-year initiative, with funding totalling US$ 10.7 million, will be financed by the Government of Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and will be implemented by UNDP Tajikistan in cooperation with UNDP Afghanistan.

It brought together UNDP HQ senior managers, Resident Coordinators/Resident Representatives, Country Directors and select Deputy Resident Representatives, leaders of Representative Offices, Regional Service Centres, Global Policy Centres, the Chair of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Staff Council, and one national officer per region.

3-4 March. The Embassy of Japan and the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Tajikistan, supported by the EU-funded UNDP-implemented BOMCA and BOMNAF Programmes, will host a two-day conference on ways to enhance border management and cross-border co-operation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The Conference has been designed within the framework of agreements reached at the EU-Japan summits, which took place respectively in Tokyo on the 28th April 2010 and in Brussels on the 28th May 2011, where Japan and the European Union reconfirmed their commitment to work together in partnership with the Government of Afghanistan, the United Nations and other international organisations to promote a secure, stable and prosperous future for the people of Afghanistan.

- UNDP brings Tajik and Turkish Ministries together to exchange best experiences on trade promotion Ankara, Turkey – 20 November 2014 – The Ministry of Economy of Turkey and the Turkish Patent Institute hosted high-level Tajik delegates representing the Presidential Executive Office and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade on a two-day study tour to Turkey, to learn the experience of Turkey on issues related to the World Trade Organization. The study tour was organized by UNDP Tajikistan in the framework of its Aid for Trade Project in close cooperation with the Embassy of Turkey in Tajikistan. Within the course of the study tour, the high-level delegates acquainted themselves with the multilateral trade system, market access negotiations for non-agricultural goods and agreement of IT, trade defense policy, technical barriers to trade and other WTO related issues. In addition to this during the seminar, participants received knowledge on how to benefit from WTO membership and promote the interests of local entrepreneurs in international trade. The Tajik delegation agreed to coordinate the implementation of WTO obligations by establishing a Working Group on WTO with further assistance of UNDP. The representatives of the Ministries established strong relationships and agreed to continue the capacity building activities on WTO. The Aid for Trade project in Central Asia is funded by the Government of Finland and supports inclusive growth and national efforts to reduce poverty and improve people’s lives by promoting trade and enhancing competitiveness.
