EU Border Management in Northern Afghanistan (BOMNAF Phase II)
UNDP in Tajikistan aims to improve integrated border management in northern Afghanistan by:
- Enhancing cross-border cooperation, coordination, and communication to reduce crime and thereby increase legal trade, travel, and commerce,
- increasing the capacity of the Afghan Border Police and Customs, and
- building confidence between Central Asian countries and Afghanistan.
Main achievements
- 1590 Afghan Border Police and Customs officers are trained in Dushanbe, Ashgabat, Mazar-e-Sharif and along the Tajik-Afghan border on Integrated Border Management and associated subjects.
- Five border infrastructure projects were constructed/upgraded and equipped, including:
- A new Border Crossing Point in Khohon district on the Afghan-Tajik border;
- A new Training Centre for the Afghan Border Police in Mazar-e-Sharif;
- Upgraded Border Crossing Point Aqina on the Afghan-Turkmen border;
- Upgraded Border Crossing Point Sheghnan on the Afghan-Tajik border;
- A new Border Crossing point under construction in Dehqonkhona on the Afghan-Tajik border to be completed by May-June 2019;
- Three regional events were conducted on Border Management to promote cross-border cooperation and collaboration between Afghanistan and Central Asia.
