Flood Recovery to Resilience

The ”Flood Recovery to Resilience” project was funded by the UNDP Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) with the total amount of 800,000 US dollars with the duration of July 2014 - June 2016.

Project Summary

The Flood Recovery to Resilience was a two-year effort which aimed to reduce risk and build resilience for approximately 3,200 families (50.02% female) affected by flooding and mud flows in the spring of 2014, principally in Sari Chashma Jamoat (Sh. Shohin District) and Chubek Jamoat (Hamadoni District). The project was launched to address critical recovery needs and increase social and physical resilience in severely flood-affected areas. The holistic approach to livelihood recovery and infrastructure rehabilitation was adopted to ensure resilience of disaster affected communities in the future.

Objectives

Floods Recovery to Resilience (R2R) project aimed to support critical recovery needs and increase social and physical resilience in severely flood-affected areas of Tajikistan in Sarichashma and Chubek jamoats.

-        Output Two: Water Supply for Relocated Families Established.

-        Output Three: Shelter Planned and Supported to Reduce Risk.

-        Output Four: Health Infrastructure Re-established:

Accomplishments

Output One: Livelihoods Recovery Supported.

The Project has delivered a range of social, economic livelihoods support including milk cows, fodder and veterinarian services, seeds, tools, fertilizers, household tree nursery development for use in land rehabilitation.

Output Two: Water Supply for Relocated Families Established.

The Project has supported the establishment of a sustainable water supply for the Bobo Nosirov relocation site. This has involved expansion of the existing spring source to handle increased demand through spring development, pumps, pipes, storage facilities.

Output Three: Shelter Planned and Supported to Reduce Risk.

The Project has established a site plan for the Bobo Nosirov relocation site with consideration of disaster risk reduction and environment. The Project has constructed 18 seismically appropriate core houses for 18 most economically disadvantaged families.

Output Four: Health Infrastructure Re-established:

The Project has funded the repair of the damaged medical clinic in Hayoti Nav, Chubek jamoat, Hamadoni district.

Output Five: Natural Hazards Assessed and Zoned.

The Project has used UNSAT services to conduct a mud flow and flooding potential assessment of the Sarichashma watershed (in the form of maps and text reports). The assessment indicated past, existing and emerging mud flow source and impact areas.
