Muminabad, 10 September 2019 – UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan and the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe has launched new Domestic Violence Prevention Cabinet in Muminabad, Tajikistan, to provide support domestic abuse victims.

Global estimates published by WHO indicate that about 1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or other types of violence in their lifetime. Women often tolerate abuse for the lack of support from the state bodies and their communities. The newly opened centre, which is the only in Muminabad, will provide support to violence survivors and refer them to other existing services such as psychological support, legal consultation.

Abovementioned Cabinet on prevention of domestic violence will be functioning in conjunction and next door to the Public Council room. The Public Council room was also launched in the frame of this initiative. The main function of the room is to strengthen community policing via bringing together and establishing cooperation among local police Civil Society and permanent members of the Working Group under the Ministry of Interior on Police Reform members. Moreover, strengthened community policing will further ensure community support to the victims of violence against women locally.

UNDP works continuously to nourish safe social environment for all and to reduce domestic violence by strengthened community policing trough building cooperation of police with local communities.  Current initiative was supported in the framework of the “Strengthening Community Security and Prevention of Violence Against Women” implemented by UNDP and “Police assistance” project implemented by OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe
