Dushanbe, 26 November 26, 2021 - UNDP has supported the national mini-football contest as a closing event of month-long series of activities in Dushanbe and Khatlon Oblast to mark the International Snow Leopard Day and raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity preservation in the country.

The Snow Leopard Cup went to Babilon company’s amateur players team, winning 5:4 against Rakh-Taxi team. The contest lasted one month with 12 amateur teams competing.

The series of events started with the Snow Leopard Festival was held in Sarichashma village of Shamsidin Shokhin district, bringing together more than 2,000 guests and residents of the district. The highlight of the event became the ceremony of unveiling the statue of snow leopard, installed at the entrance to the Dashtijum reserve, marking the southernmost area of snow leopard habitats in Tajikistan, and symbolizing the importance of peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife.

The information campaign, started with the "Bars in the City" initiative in June 2021, is aimed at highlighting the call for unity of people and nature, and the importance of safeguarding healthy ecosystems.

The ultimate goal is to stimulate a new perspective for interagency cooperation in environmental protection, sports development, healthy living and, sustainable development through higher level of awareness and better coordination of policies of relevant agencies and stakeholders.

Snow leopard is a rare species inhabiting high-altitude mountains in 12 countries across Northern and Central Asia countries. Tajikistan forms an important link between the southern and northern range populations of snow leopards and serves as a vital corridor for the genetic interchange between these populations. The current estimated number of snow leopard population in Tajikistan is in the range of 280 to 300 individuals.
