UNDP launches new study on Economic Cost of Climate Change Adaptation in Tajikistan

January 27, 2022

Dushanbe, January 25, 2022: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Government of the Russian Federation, launched a study to assess the Costs and Benefits of Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management Sectors of Tajikistan.

The initiative was launched under UNDP’s overarching “Facilitating Climate Resilience in Tajikistan” project, the main objective of which is the facilitation of access to climate finance to contribute to building climate-resilient communities in disaster-prone mountainous regions across Tajikistan. The study is being implemented by the Czech companies DEKONTA, BEZK, and the Czech University of Life Sciences.

The study approach involves (i) scoping and review of existing knowledge and initiatives in Tajikistan, (ii) consultation with the key stakeholders, and (iii) quantitative modelling of climate change, its impact and adaptation, and the economic implications. The study aimed to assess climate change's biophysical and socio-economic impacts and estimate the total economic losses and damages to the countries in three sectors by 2050. The districts of Kuhistoni Mastchoh, Gissar, Shaartuz, Fayzabad, Kanibadam and Muminabad were selected as pilot areas for the study. More than thirty officials from the govt, research organizations, NGOs, and academia were present at the launching event. Results of the study will support the development of future policies and programs for climate change adaptation in Tajikistan, including initiatives for regional cooperation and capacity building in climate-resilient development.

“Tajikistan has been cited as one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the Central Asian region. As the climate is changing, the country will have to adapt to higher temperatures and changed patterns of extreme events. The question is not whether adaptation measures need to be taken but how, and at what cost. Acting now is essential, as any delay will only mean a higher cost in the future’’ Mr. Arif Faisal, UNDP’s team leader on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction, stated in his introduction speech.

“The menace of climate change is a global issue. The future of our children in Europe and your children in Tajikistan depends on all of us,’’ Mr. Davide Messana, representative of DEKONTA company, leader of the Project consortium, said in his welcome remarks.

The project, funded by the Government of the Russian Federation, will be jointly implemented by the DEKONTA, Czech University of Life Sciences and BEZK Ltd.
