Engaging Communities to Access and Effectively Manage Drinking Water Supply System in rural Tajikistan through the Global Water Challenge

In Laboba, Khatlon, there are only five points of access to piped water near household, which leaves more than 90% of the population with no access to clean drinking water and sanitation services. The only existing water source is outdated and malfunctioning, hardly meeting the demands of the community.

The burden of fetching water for households and storing the collected water is mainly carried by women. Therefore, in its effort  to improve the lives of the village’s 2,370 people, including 1,156 women, UNDP, in partnership with Coca-Cola, is  establishing sustainable drinking water supply system in the village to promotion efficient water use and utilization among women in Laboba village.

The proposed action will promote community ownership over the newly introduced drinking water supply system and ensure that all community is aware of their right to access clean water, and that women are especially targeted to act as leaders in water management and conservation.
